What Happened on March 8 Woman’s Day? What Happened on March 8, International Women’s Day? International Women’s Day was first officially recognized and celebrated in 1977. But the events of March 8 go back much further. On March 8, 1857, a terrible event took place in New York.
About 40,000 workers in New York, USA, went on strike at a textile factory to have better working conditions. As the strikes continued, the police locked the workers in the factory. Afterwards, a fire broke out in the factory and a total of 129 workers lost their lives. 120 of the 129 workers consisted of women workers. This event had a great impact and more than 100 thousand people attended the funeral.
On March 8, 1908, a rally for union rights and women’s voting rights was held in New York led by female workers. And this effort of women lasted until 1977 and became official in 1977. The United Nations General Assembly recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day.
