What Happened on May 19?

First of all, we would like to tell you about the importance of May 19th. On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsun and the first steps of the national struggle were taken. The first step of the start of our War of Independence started with the departure of the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to Samsun on 19 May. It was first celebrated in Samsun on May 19, 1926, and became official for the first time in 1935 and was declared a national day and turned into a holiday. The first name of the holiday was 19 May Atatürk Day.

Why was 19 May called Youth and Sports Day?

We all know that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a person who gave great importance to young people. In each of his speeches, he would express how important youth is. Celebrated with its first name in the 19 May Atatürk Day celebrations at the Fenerbahçe Stadium with the initiatives of Beşiktaş, the first 19 May day was celebrated with the participation of thousands of athletes from Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe. This first 19 May Atatürk Day, celebrated by young people and athletes with enthusiasm, Beşiktaş Founder Member Ahmet Fetgeri Aşeni came up with the idea that today should be dedicated to all youth and that 19 May should be celebrated as Youth and Sports Day. This idea was approved at the congress and with the approval of Atatürk, its name was changed to 19 May Youth and Sports Day.

After the 19 May Youth and Sports Day, its name was changed again. With the decision taken on 20 June 1938, its name was changed to 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. The reason for this is that May 19 is accepted as Atatürk’s birthday and the first step in the birth of our country is taken on May 19, and together with this, it is interpreted as the birth of Atatürk with our country. That’s why on May 19, we commemorate the founder of our country, the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. We thank him for giving us this country and such special days, and we respectfully commemorate him and his comrades in arms.
